Camp Widow comes to Canada — see you in September?

CampWidowI have written previously about the healing, friendships and wisdom I have gained through my involvement with the Soaring Spirits Loss Foundation and, specifically, its Camp Widow conferences. That’s why I’m so thrilled that SSLF will be bringing Camp Widow to Canada, September 26th to 28th, right here in my hometown of Toronto!!

I want to let everyone know about it, and encourage you, if you are so moved, to seriously think about attending. There are wonderful workshops each day that educate, inspire, entertain and comfort. I went to my first conference in San Diego during the summer of 2012, a year and a half after my husband passed. It was hugely helpful and as well, planted the seeds of friendships that have grown to this day. That’s because even more than the opportunity to learn, it is the connections with other people who have had a similar life experience and who ‘get it’ that make the experience so unique. No need to explain or apologize or deny. You’re among friends

In the past two years, I have returned as a workshop leader and at Camp Widow Canada in September, I will be delivering two workshops, on finances:  The Essential of Investing — Made Fun! on Friday and another, A More Confident You, Financially on Saturday. I share my own personal and professional experience with the aim of helping other widowed people achieve control and confidence in at least one area of their lives following the loss of a spouse.

Regardless of where you are on your grief journey, I suspect you will find there is something at camp for you — from the challenges of dealing with grieving teens to re-entering the dating world to ‘celebrating’ the holidays.

I hope to see you there. If you are able to attend, please let me know and I will make a special point of saying hello. I would love to introduce you to my city, to one another and to a healing experience for us all.

Getting through the ice storm in Toronto

This Christmas in Toronto is surely one we will all remember for a long time. Hit by an historic ice storm on the weekend, 300,000 homes and businesses, mine included, were without power for 24 hours or more. And 150,000 residences are still without power this Christmas Eve. As well, with many stores closed, Christmas …

What the starfish taught me about healing after loss

Down in Florida last month I visited the local Mote Marine Aquarium. My friend, Karen and I were like children, daring one another to reach into the petting tank to touch eels, stingrays and starfish – and squealing with disgust at the texture. Nearby, a volunteer guide explained that the starfish has the capacity to …

The magic of Widows’ Wellness Day

I apologize for having been absent from writing for several weeks in preparation for Widows’ Wellness Day and now, finally with the opportunity, I find it impossible to capture in words the experience of the event. On Saturday October 26th, more than 50 widows (and one very welcome widower!) gathered at a golf club in …
